What is stress and trauma?

We experience stress each time we face difficulties that, to some degree, challenge our present coping strategies, and trauma can result due to exposure to prolonged stress or to overwhelming stimuli that completely exceed our ability to cope.

Once that happens, specific physiological changes occur in our brain and the body leading to shifts in how we function physically, emotionally and cognitively. If that pattern is established and habituated, it can lead to lifelong changes that can significantly lower the quality of life.

Chronic stress and unresolved psychological trauma can have various presentations:
  • PTSD, anxiety, low self-esteem, eating disorders, depression, and phobias.
  • It can be as well underlying cause of many somatic problems, such as cardiovascular disorders, gastric problems or insomnia. It is usually the underlying cause of all addictions.
  • Trauma and stress highly correlate with mood swings, and problems with learning – concentration as well as with memorising and recalling information.
  • It usually is the main cause of social anxiety and shyness that leads to social withdrawal.
  • Lack of social connection, in turn, can lead to many somatic, psychological and emotional problems.
  • If experienced at a young age, trauma can cause developmental problems.
  • Thanks to epigenetics, trauma aspects can go down from generation to generation.

In modern life, experiencing prolonged exposure to stress and, as a consequence of it experience of trauma is inevitable.

To be able to deal with it in a healthy way, first, we need to deal with accumulated, unresolved trauma and stress. Otherwise, unresolved trauma will be constantly triggered and we will not be able to successfully develop new strategies for coping with stress.

We offer a variety of therapeutic approaches for healing trauma and its effects, helping you to move forward.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the leading therapeutic approaches allowing in a relatively short period of time to resolve accumulated trauma and stress promoting greater psychological integration and well-being.

EMDR in conjunction with other approaches such as hypnotherapy, ego state therapy, inner child and coaching and other approaches can offer very successful intervention for a broad range of emotional and psychological problems, along with easing the effects of somatic problems. It can as well effectively support healing and recovery from psychosomatic health problems.
