Sessions are attended by family members (e.g. couples, parents with children) who would like to understand each other better, help each other to deal with difficulties and change some aspects of their relationships so they could be happier as individuals and as a family.

Sessions are usually of 90 minutes duration scheduled initially every week, then every other week then finally once a month. The reason for the decrease in frequency comes from an observation that families need time to implement changes that are discussed during family sessions.

Often tasks are assigned, so the family members have a chance to practice skills, rehearse new ways of relating to each other, and reinforce changes. The tasks help to remain focused on the desired outcome.
